Mon premier contact avec Rodney Branigan a été via cette vidéo YouTube étonnante de la chanson « Body Language » (voir ci-dessous) où on le voit jouer simultanément d’une guitare et d’une mandoline tout en chantant ! Quand l’occasion s’est présentée de l’interviewer j’ai sauté dessus.
Rodney Branigan fait partie de cette nouvelle génération de guitariste qui revisite complètement le domaine de la guitare acoustique en y apportant une approche très personnelle qui donne un résultat franchement magnifique.

Notez que j’avais eu le plaisir de l’interviewer via Skype l’année dernière dans l’épisode #173.
C’est un épisode bien particulier que je vous propose cette fois puisqu’il s’agit d’une conversation Skype entre 4 blogueurs/podcasteurs guitare répartis entre les Etats-Unis, l’Australie et la France !
Si vous êtes fans de guitare électrique, vous avez forcément vu sur scène sans le savoir à un moment ou à un autre l’invité de cette épisode, Mike Keneally.
En effet, Mike a joué derrière Joe Satriani, Steve Vaï, Frank Zappa et bien d’autres encore.
Pendant l’interview nous avons parlé entre autre de son excellent album Wing Beat Fantastic dont je vous propose quelques extraits avant l’interview comme d’habitude.
Cet album est intéressant à plus d’un titre, les chansons sont complexes sans être alambiquées, il y a bien sûr beaucoup de guitares mais ce n’est clairement pas un album de shredder dans le mauvais sens du terme. Vous y trouverez un soin pour les mélodies qui vous rappellera forcément les Beatles.
Comme je dis souvent, il n’y aura jamais trop de blogs et podcasts qui parlent de guitare, c’est pourquoi je suis très heureux de vous présenter une interview de Jonathan Bloomer, un collègue blogueur et podcasteur, qui est l’auteur de l’excellent Guitarnoize, un blog et podcast en anglais sur la guitare dont je suis fan.
Oui nous parlons tous les deux de guitares. Non nous ne sommes pas compétiteurs. Je pense même que nous nous complétons très bien, en effet il y a tellement de sujets et de musiciens à couvrir qu’il n’y pas vraiment de double emploi.
On a tous dans la tête le riff de synthé entêtant de « The Final Countdown » d’Europe, en tout cas c’est ce que m’évoquait ce groupe jusqu’à ce que j’écoute ce nouvel album « Bag Of Bones » qui m’a fait découvrir une musique puissante et très rock.
Ce fût donc avec grand plaisir que je suis allé interviewer John Norum, soliste du groupe.

It’s a very special interview I propose you in this show because you might not know that but I am a big fan of Rory Gallagher who died in 1995 so I jumped on the occasion to interview Rory’s brother, Donal, who followed him a lot on the road and who his taking care of Rory’s legacy now.
In this interview Donal tells the whole story about how Rory almost joined the Rolling Stones after Mick Taylor quit in 1974. You will hear this and many more about Rory’s music.
And who is the guitar player has NOT fantasized about Rory’s battered 61 Stratocaster?
All Rory’s albums are currently rereleased on CD so it’s the perfect time to (re)discover the music of this great guitar player who disappeared way to soon.

After I put this interview online Donal sent me a mail to give some more details, here’s an extract from the mail.

Marty Friedman (aka @_martyfriedman_) is one of those guitar super stars who seems to be going from one project to another non-stop.
I had the pleasure to catch him on Skype for the interview you will hear in this episode. He was in Tokyo, I was in Paris so no surprise the sound is kind of weird here and there.
